How Often Should I Post to My Blog?

Posted by Marty Dickinson on Jan 8, 2009

How often do you post to your blog? Once a month? Once a week? Once a day? This is a question I’m asked at every workshop or during every new blog implementation we do for clients. And, the answer is a resound YES!

Alex Mandossian posted recently on his blog that he surveyed his list asking if they would rather he post twice to his blog per week or three times. How would you respond to such a question?

My guess is that you would pick twice per week. Why? Because you would think of the difference between 2 and 3 and pick the two because it would take you less time each week to go visit the blog and read the posts. It’s a psychological thing…2 is faster than 3, right?

The better question Alex might have asked would be related to quality. Maybe something like, “If I expanded my blog to offer the same (2) educational articles I provide you every week PLUS another (3) days per week where I comment on how happenings in the world might be impacting your business in the next year, would you be interested?

Conversely, if you have one killer post every month, I believe that’s better than posting garbage daily just for the sake of being able to say you post daily to your blog. People don’t want “routine” whether it’s twice a week, three times, or seven, for the sake of numbers. They want quality information…period.

What is your response?

Rule of thumb to keep your audience engaged is 2 to 3 times/week. However, I don’t think there is a ‘magic’ number. I think it relates to the value and timeliness of the information provided. I’m using Twitter more and more so my strategy is evolving to provide quick hits, quick commentary, links to tools or other resources via twitter and use my blog for longer posts and more original material. I do know that when I blog more, I get more traffic then when I ‘ease up’. I think part of it is training your readers to expect something from you the same as the Denver Post has trained me to check my driveway every morning for that day’s newspaper. From an SEO perspective it’s about training the search engines to spider your stuff more frequently which will help build that audience. Alex M is, however, a unique case in that he is well established above and beyond his blog postings so he may not be the best example to build a case study of blogging frequency around.

Great points Tom and thanks for contributing. I tend to want “more” from established pros than 2 or even 3 days of posting per week if they’ll give it to me. In fact, if my fav’s post something every day or even twice a day, I’d be all over it. I still think it’s kind of ironic that Alex’s closest followers chose to hear less from him since they were given the chance to vote. Some questions are better left unasked it sounds like.
