Internet TV is Coming Internet TV is Here

Posted by Marty Dickinson on Jan 8, 2009

Did you see the announcement about Yahoo partnering with Samsung to offer Internet TV? This is one of the most important posts I’ve seen in a year and not one person added a comment to the post that DM News made two days ago. Unbelievable.

The crux of it is that you will be able to buy a flat panel t.v., turn it on with your remote, and then use widgets to interact with web-based apps like stock update, news, and my favorite…the sharing of videos and pictures.

It’s beginning folks. My prediction is coming true. In three years, I believe we will access the web #1 with our mobile devices, #2 with our televisions, and then somewhere down a distant 3, 4, or 5, with our computers.

So, my big quest for 2009 as it was in 2008 is video. Can you see how important video is becoming? What will people want to see most of all when they access the web from their t.v.? Video. Video. Video.

Internet TV is coming. Will you be ready?

I think its a great idea however do the ISP’s? Probably not. I could go into a whole big thing about this but I will try to keep it short.

I use Comcast and have a limit of 250GB of bandwidth a month. I don’t come anywhere close to it, however once this becomes more streamline more and more will be taken up. 53 DVD quality movies eats up almost that entire 250GB allotment. Now we have HD and Blue Ray titles that will eat up even more, and thats just for 1 TV. My household has a few.

I love the idea however I feel it might get crushed or delayed because the lack of infrastructure the ISP’s have to provide this kind of data throughput to every household. The cost to upgrade an ISP’s infrastructure is huge and a cost they don’t want to pay (ie. limiting bandwidth usage instead of upgrading to accommodate for the usage).

In the end, I hope it does happen and soon. Places like NetFlix offering streaming including to the Xbox 360 I think are really helping this out. Hopefully in the near future companies like AT&T, Comcast, Cox etc will see this as a good thing instead of a bad thing.
